What is Dandy Blend?

What is Dandy Blend? I think that’s the first elephant in the room (there’s a second one as well). Dandy Blend is a water-soluble powder. At the risk of making the obvious even clearer, I’ll just come out and say it. Water-soluble means that it easily mixes into hot or cold water. This rich brown mixture is made up of ground barley, rye, chicory, and dandelion roots. Oh, and it is organically grown on sustainably conscious farms of Poland.

That’s Great It’s Eco Friendly, Right? But What’s It Taste Like?

If you’re a coffee connoisseur like myself, you’re probably skeptical that Dandy Blend could possibly be a suitable substitution for your morning (or afternoon, or evening… or night) cup of joe. Well, I can honestly say, I was pleasantly surprised by the subtly sweet, rich, creamy, and just the right amount of nutty taste of Dandy Blend. Does it taste just like coffee? Um… no. If anyone tells you otherwise I’d question if they ever even tried a cup of coffee. Because it is not coffee. It is less acidic, less bitter and it’s free of caffeine.

Why Would You Want A Caffeine Free Coffee Alternative?

It would make sense that a suitable coffee replacement has at least some caffeine in it, right? Well, I guess it really depends on your motivation for wanting to replace coffee. The amazing thing about Dandy Blend is, they claim that even if you decide to switch cold turkey, you will not get the dreaded caffeine withdrawal headache. This is most likely due to the detoxing benefits that it provides (that’s not the only benefit!) What’s even more astounding is, I think they’re right! Because when I switched full force over from coffee to Dandy Blend? I didn’t get one withdrawal headache.

Now I personally believe there are a lot of variables that go into the cause of those headaches from not having your usual morning java infusion (proper hydration, sleep quality, mindset…).

That being said, read the reviews online and you’ll find that they are tons of people that say they were able to painlessly switch over from coffee to this dandy little blend.

Benefits of Drinking Dandy Blend

The overwhelming list of benefits is probably what drew me most to this dandelion beverage. Not only does it have 50 trace minerals in one cup, but it also can provide all the advantages listed below. Decide for yourself if it sounds worth it:

  1. Improves digestive system function
  2. Balances good bacteria within intestines
  3. Assists stomach and liver in flushing out bile and gastric acid
  4. Aids kidneys in releasing excess water, sodium and waste
  5. Replenishes potassium stores
  6. Detoxes toxins from the body
  7. Full of antioxidants that slow the aging process
  8. Contains phytonutrients shown to be effective in slowing, and even preventing the growth of cancer cells
  9. Regulates blood sugar and insulin levels
  10. Lowers blood pressure
  11. Decreases inflammation throughout the body
  12. Boosts immune system!

Elephant #2… What’s Wrong With Drinking Coffee?

Now let’s chat about what’s wrong with drinking coffee. In the broad sense, there is nothing wrong with drinking coffee (stay with me now). It has some pretty great health benefits, and studies have shown it helps reduce the risk of prevalent diseases.

However, coffee is addictive. And many people (myself included) will find that they need (“need”) and want more and more of this igniting elixir. Drinking coffee regularly builds tolerance to its energizing effects. It also produces a slight rise in dopamine which is something that’s hard to ever get enough of (it just feels so good!). Dopamine is good.

The only thing is, like any unhealthy addiction- it loses its luster and becomes less effective over time (this has a lot to do with the chemicals in our brain). And while drinking coffee is good IN MODERATION- drinking too much can also cause some pretty adverse effects.

Side Effect of Drinking Too Much Coffee:

  • Increased anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Ulcers
  • Diarrhea
  • Acid reflux
  • Kidney stones
  • Muscle loss (atrophy)
  • High blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Dehydration
  • Stomach cramps
  • Abdominal bloating

Not so great sounding, don’t you agree? The average coffee drinker in the US drinks 2-3 cups a day. Scientific studies seem to generally agree that 2-4 cups of coffee a day is safe. That being said, if you’re a regular jitter juice drinker and you’re experiencing jitters or any of the side effects above- it might be time to cut back!

How Do You Prepare Dandy Blend?

Preparing a cup of this herbal delight is as easy as the name rolls off your tongue. (“Dandy Blend” does have a flow to it, don’t you think?) Since it simply dissolves in the liquid you choose to put it in, you don’t need a coffee maker, a french press, a grinder, filters, or tea bags of any sort!

What’s even more, it tastes great hot, chilled, or iced. You can put milk into it, mix it into a cup of milk, or drink as is. Many like to add a sweetener. It’s already slightly sweet and pleasant, so I don’t think it’s necessary per se- but every now and then I do like to add some local raw honey.

If you want to sweeten it up I recommend using unprocessed natural sugars or replacements, such as: raw honey, pure maple syrup, stevia, monk fruit, coconut sugar, or agave syrup.

All Right, Maybe It’s Worth A Try- How Much Does It Cost?

When I saw that a two-pound bag of this stuff cost $30.49 I almost clicked off the page entirely. I’m glad I didn’t though! Because when I compare the cost to what I used to spend on K-Cups (we’re talking a 100 count box, once a month), I realize $30 really isn’t that bad. Also, a two-pound bag has 454 servings in it!!!

Of course, that’s if you’re only using a teaspoon per cup. I like to use a heaping tablespoon because I like my coffee (and my tea, and my coffee alternative) rich and robust.

That means it’s still approximately 150 servings (give or take) per two-pound bag. Also, it does come in smaller bag options, at lower price points. But if you’re like me and prefer to go with the best bang for your buck, then the two-pound bag is the one that has the lowest cost per ounce.

So Where Does One Find This Superfood?

Whether you are looking to give up coffee altogether, or merely want to work at cutting down- I’d be highly surprised if you Dandy Blend did not fit the bill. I’ve been using it for nine years now and I’ve had trouble finding it consistently anywhere other than Amazon. Like I said before, the 2lb bag is the most economical option if you’re looking at the big picture.

However, if you’re still skeptical then I say why not just buy a small bag and at least give it a try? You can find the links for both options below:

OR

Click here to buy the smaller one for only $10!

Let Me Know How It Goes!

Drop a comment below letting me know how you like it. How would you describe the taste of Dandy Blend? What’s your favorite way to prepare it? How many daily cups of coffee would you say was your average before, versus after Dandy Blend? Or did you hate it all together and you think I’m a crazy person for even suggesting that it could replace such a tried and true classic??

  2. I traded my nightly highly sugared ice cream for a quart sized Dandy blend. I add ice, cream, 1/4 tsp cocoa, and some stevia and shake it up! I don’t even miss the ice cream!! Amazing!
