How Many Minutes To Meditate So You Can Get The Best Results.
The good news about starting (and maintaining) a meditation practice is that you don’t need to spend hours in meditation. In other words, no one is asking you to be a monk here. That being said, there are substantial benefits to increasing the time spent in meditation as you get more accustomed to it.
A Good Starting Point, If You’re A Beginner.
If you are just starting a meditation practice, then the idea of sitting silently while focusing solely on your thoughts might sound boring, overwhelming, or nearly impossible. I speak from experience. However, you can first start with as little as 3 minutes in meditation a day and still reap a multitude of all the rewards it has to offer!
Beginning a meditation practice is an empowering act of self-love & discovery. In this article, I’ll share with you the best length of time to get the most from your meditations, as well as the essentials to getting started and staying consistent.
The Best Meditations Last For This Long.
Well, as if meditation wasn’t amazing in itself, it gets even better. (Click here to read my post on the 23 Benefits Of Meditation!) Because as it turns out, there is a magic number of minutes you should spend in meditation, and that number lies within you. Okay, I’ll stop trying to channel my inner Baby Yoda and say it a little more straightforward. The time you spend in meditation is completely personal to you, your abilities, and your individual needs at that moment in time.
So maybe one week, your meditations consist of 30, 60 minutes at a time. The next week, you can barely get through 5-10 minutes, but hey that’s okay. Because what matters is that you show up for yourself. And you don’t give up.
Personally, I find this removes a lot of the pressure surrounding meditation. And I love the idea that all you need to do is simply take cues from your body while paying attention to your inner being.
But Don’t Sell Yourself Short In Your Meditation Practice.
While sure, you can get just as many of the physical & mental health benefits from your meditation practice in as little as 5 minutes a day. The coach in me wants to remind you that you will experience substantially less personal growth if you stay in your comfort zone! That’s why I recommend pushing your meditation duration for at least a few minutes longer, once a week at a minimum. Additionally, you could increase the frequency instead of aiming for longer sessions.
So let’s say you regularly meditate first thing in the morning for 10 minutes. On a morning when you feel up to it, aim for 15 or 20 (or even more!). This would be an example of increasing the length.
On the other hand, let’s use that same scenario laid out below. But instead of meditation for longer than 10 minutes, you meditate an additional 10 minutes before going to bed. This is an example of increasing the frequency.
Procrastination Is Your Worst Enemy.
Procrastination can rob you of some of life’s greatest joys while causing life’s greatest sorrow to come raining upon your head. And the same is true when it comes to meditation! I know how tempting it can be to put it off with rationalizations such as: “oh no, I’ll do it later- this (whatever ‘this’ is) is more important.”
But I assure you, you always have 5 minutes to spare. And 5 minutes spent in meditation is 5 minutes spent communing with your own soul. You need this.
So don’t put it off! If you’ve been considering beginning a meditation practice, start today. Like seriously. As soon as you finish reading this blog article. If you’re not in a private setting, then excuse yourself to the bathroom for a few minutes. Put some headphones in and listen to a guided meditation. It’s that simple and it’s that easy!!
And actually, it can be even simpler than that. Head over to my article on Meditation to learn about the different types & ways to meditate.
How To Incorporate Meditation Into Your Daily Routine.
Meditating on a daily basis is going to bring you the best results. Hands down, no questions asked. The research supports this, but I can personally attest to it as well!
Do you brush your teeth every day? Use the bathroom first thing in the morning? Get out of your pajamas and put on day clothes? These are habits. And these are proof that you can just as easily throw a few minutes of meditation into the bunch!
Personally, I like to do a little yoga followed by meditation first thing upon waking & getting out of bed. It generally takes me no more than 30 minutes, sometimes as little as 10. But on average, I’d say most mornings I spend around 15 minutes doing this little morning ritual.

Different Ways To Meditate.
If you’re just getting started, you might be a bit confused about the different types of meditation & how you should go about meditating yourself. I did my best to thoroughly list all the different types of meditation if you click to read this previous article here. My favorite is definitely Guided Meditation with Healing Crystals.
However, you should dabble around with all the different types to find which works best for you and your personal needs.
Conclusion.
As tends to be the case with all healthy habits, consistency is the key when beginning & maintaining a meditation practice. Now, as far as when you’ll begin to notice results, for me it was within the first month upon beginning. They were subtle and honestly underappreciated on my part! It wasn’t until I fell back a bit from being consistent with my daily meditation practice that I really began to notice just how much it had truly been helping me.
So stick with it. It works if you work it, and it doesn’t work if you aren’t willing to put in the work. But thankfully, it’s really rather easy to begin and maintain a meditation practice!
